It does no good, but when you are so marginalized in the rest of wider society, you search out a haven of people like yourself.

This is true for me. Instead of fighting the good fight on religious websites, as Metamag suggests (and I'm not disputing his point, because it is well-taken), it's nice to hang out and occasionally enjoy some comraderie in a place where like-minded folks can be found.

It's lonely in America for outspoken atheists, and I'm reluctant to spend the precious time I do have making myself feel even lonelier by posting on religious websites.

Same here. I do it on the Huffington Post, where they allow even the dumbest people to troll. For instance, Gay Voices will be run over with homophobes. A Richard Dawkins article will be run over with Evangelicals. I can only do it for so long though. That level of ignorance raises blood pressure and kills brain cells. Then I have to retreat back here to recover.
