I think the figures for America are skewed by the lack of regard (on a par with serial rapists) with which atheists are held by the majority.
Let's take serial rapists, for example. Suppose you were one and you get a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative of a national survey promising anonymity. Would you pipe right up and say, "Oh, yes sir, I've been a serial rapist since I was 16." or do you just keep quiet about it?
Not saying we are anything like a "silent majority"- just saying we are under-reported.
