Vitruvianman, Not sure space hotels, moonbases and cloned mammoths are a failure in science they are just a lack of money for follies, blame chelsea and man city for those failures not science. also I doubt engineering and technology has ever evolved smoothly but always in boom and busts, the speed at which euler applied hookes law and newtons physics and calculus to produce theories of elastic failure was breathtaking, but one could never expect to draw a graph and extrapolate infinite progress from it.
