It's really just another symptom of a larger problem- Americans distrust science. From evolution to climate change to vaccinations, we bury our heads in false but easy to grasp mantras. We seem to think if science is not giving us faster internet downloads or crisper TV images, it is overstepping its boundaries.
And some of these truth-deniers occasionally have their fingers on the button. And you were worried about Iran.
