Another metaphor is craziness is like a magnetic field. The more crazies you get together, the more their fields superimpose and interfere constructively (making the field stronger). Their delusion becomes the consensus reality. Then the field induces craziness in a normal person entering the field.

The crazier thing is that the crazies don't think they are crazy. Insanity in the individual is rare but in the group it is the rule. People are probably wired to conform by social pressures. It reminds me of the ash experiment - which explains a lot when you think about it in the context of religion and general woo.
