The problem is, that most serious scientific work has long-term benefits, and in the world of the quick buck, the nearer you are physically and temporally to the money, the better the rewards. In such a short sighted society, how many times have we seen good scientists have their patents stolen or bought out by big business executives monopolising the finance.
