I see many similarities between the doubting/non-believing clergy now and the gays thirty or forty years ago. Back then admitting being gay (homosexual back then, before gay was appropriated.) was a terrifying thing. Not just the clergy either. In some families, and some cultures, admitting your an atheist can lead not just to loss of community but to loss of jobs and even loss of life, just as coming out as a gay could in some areas of the civilised west in the fifties and sixties and still does in some of the more primitive areas of the world.
