Environmental conditions have supported the development of giants at certain times in certain places, as still happens today in some isolated island habitats.
Often it is just that big fossils are easier to recognise.
I call this the awareness of the obvious - If it's big enough to fall over or nasty enough to grab your attention the casual observer will notice it! (There are thousands of living things in Africa - make a list and see how many you can name - and then count how many of these meet the two requirements.)
