Here’s a simple arithmetic question: A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

A similar one is if I have a plank of wood that is twelve feet long. If it's cut into two pieces, what are their measurements if one piece is one foot longer than the other?
