There's nothing wrong with shortcuts - as long as you are ready to question your results! Example: The bat costs one dollar and the ball ten cents. Check: One dollar is only ninety cents more than ten cents, so let's try the mean value one dollar and five cents. Check: correct! It's far more likely that a smart person would solve the problem like this than by using equations.
