Don't let it drag you down. I have the good fortune to have never been in your situation, but I sympathise deeply.
Threats and intimidations are the hallmark of a cornered animal or a bully, and who sides a bully but fools. Ultimately, this kind of response is self-defeating.
Write a memoir to vent your frustration, seek like-minded people (anonymously), but stay safe. The Internet is a great tool for expressing your thoughts.
Then who knows, times will hopefully change for the best, and you will be able to help your country shake loose that monkey on its back for good. It took Europe centuries, and it's still work in progress, but words and ideas travel fast these days.
