I am not sure in what class of orthodox jew the OP found himself. When I lived in Israel and went to school we studied the bible as a humanities type class not in a religious way. We were free to interpret the talmud.>>
Don't Rabbis interpret the Talmud for you? They say that "god promised Jews a chunk of the Middle East from a burning bush and that is their justification to sequester Palestine" Most Jews believe this and support the ongoing "creeping genocide" of the Palestinians which has been going on since 1948.
Of course it may just be that the Jews all individually made this interptetation (or at least most of them) so the campaign continues. A School Humanities class? Hardly! War propaganda?
