I encountered this same nonsense in boot camp back in January of 2001. They made you go to religious services on Sunday mornings or you could have the much more "friendly" option of being hazed back in the barracks. So... you choose to go to some service to avoid the Drill Instructors at the barracks.
In 2005 I encountered more of the same religiosity from a Lt. Colonel in charge of an Aviation Logistics Squadron stationed in Iwakuni Japan - This Lt. Colonel was preaching how its all part of god's plan that we are here to defend christian america in the world against evil and we were warriors of god. The idea of this windbag still makes me want to vomit.
