I've been hearing a lot of grumbling about American taxpayer dollars being spent on this achievement from my Tea Party types of relatives who took a break from sending me Facebook posts about the supposed immorality of atheism and how silly it is to believe that humans came from apes and muck to complain about NASA.
$2.5 billion was spent on Curiosity; $15 billion on the Olympics. I'd say NASA's achievement and what we as a global community will learn is money well spent.
