My motivation is the onlookers, as opposed to the person I'm engaged in discussion with. Indeed, it could be argued that I'm not actually discussing with them at all, simply using their arguments as a sort of didactic springboard. Frankly, if your motivation is to change the minds of the people you're engaged with, you're almost certainly going to be disappointed, as most people are so entrenched in their positions that they simply can't be swayed by any amount of evidence.
