The United States signed similar treaties during the 1887 to 1836 period with Morocco, Algiers and Tunis. There’s no “not a Christian nation” clause in any of them. But, if you read them, you will find the following language:

In the Name of Almighty God . . . trusting in God . . . the Christian powers . . . any Christian power . . . the other Christian powers . . . with the help of God . . . the term “Moors” in juxtaposition to “Christians” . . . contrasts “Moorish” with “Christian" Powers . . . must be paid for the said Christians . . . God is infinite . . . those who profess the religion of the Messiah . . . by the permission of God . . . with the will of the Most High . . . the Christian year . . .
