Why are we so intelligent?

I am an atheist - no question. But something has always bothered me. It appears to me, that natural selection causes species to evolve to survive, but in terms of our cognitive ability, we seemed to have evolved far more than necessary simply to reproduce. I thought of the fact that humans have been in competition with each other, but only a tiny proportion of our history has involved us being densely populated. So my question is, what is the natural environment that has caused us to evolve so radically, and so quickly in terms of our intelligence? Why are we capable of having this discussion? Why did we continue to evolve intelligently? It seems to me that, our intelligence is way beyond what we require in the natural world to ensure our survival. What factors caused this process to continue?
