I wonder if he ever gave the servers and computers that run the vaticans website a magical blessing? What happens when they create or download new information? Surely there are many unholy 0s and 1s lurking about there...

He's right! (there's a first ime for everthing) some people are remote, losing touch with the real world, and living with media exaggeration disinformation, and virtual fantasy. A bit like the Vatican then.

I wonder if it would be possible to convince him that 1s were the work of the devil?? Something like...

0s are holy (this makes it easy to remember - they have a hole in the middle) but the 1s are the work of the devil. They, cleverly mingled in, in the right proportions so that nobody notices their evil intentions, escape onto the worldwide web where they allow porn and information about condoms to travel. If the internet was comprised entirely of 0s, there would be no porn or condom information websites. The proof of this has just leaked out - it is that an anagram of 'Tim Berners-Lee' is 'Terrible Semen'.

Paul Kurtz and Pope Benedict XVI both have something in common: they're in their 80s and should retire from a public life and enjoy their final days sipping cocktails beside a pool.

"The image can become quite independent of reality". Yes, despite the silken dresses and the lace petticoats, the Pope is not a real woman.

OP
"New technologies and the progress they bring can make it impossible to distinguish truth from illusion and can lead to confusion between reality and virtual reality,"

Should read...

"The Catholic Religion and the dogma it brings can make it impossible to distinguish truth from illusion and can lead to confusion between reality and virtual insanity,"

There fixed it right up!

It sounds like the pope has been watching too much Caprica! In this Battlestar Galactica prequel, the current plot is around using a "Second Life" type computer platform and making it so people that have died can continue to live in the program. All one needs is a little bit of DNA and you get the whole person back whether they want it or not.

No wonder the poor guy is confused.

404 - Common Sense not found.

I think it is more like a 403 (forbidden) or perhaps, in the case of the pope, a 418 (RFC 2324).

ROME (AFP) – Pope Benedict XVI said on Thursday that the media's increasing reliance on images, fuelled by the endless development of new technologies, risked confusing real life with virtual reality.

Yeah, well if the Pope must log into Second Life as Betty Bigboobs and hang out with other virtual femme fatales who are in reality 25 stone truck drivers.......what does he expect ?

It is precisely this "indifference towards real life" that makes the Catholic Church such a force for evil in the world. The RCC has a morality that is based on fantasy rather than real world consequences, this leads to human tradgedy on a colossal scale.

Comment 14 by Tanweer :

As a believer (though most certainly not a Papist, Catholic or Christian), I have but one observation to make here.

Did you really feel the need to qualify your statement? We treat all believers here with the same disdain.

Do you not see or understand why no one listens to atheists or is attracted to atheism?

Jeez, I wonder who keeps buying books written by Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens et al?

For all of your high brow scientific and rational thinking, you are not possessed of a single iota of common courtesy or respect.

Respect needs to be earned. So far, you've amassed zero points... and are moving into negative numbers.

Indeed, if you were to take a step back and actually read most of your comments, you would see that they are, on the whole, petty, pathetic and utterly abnoxious.

Just your opinion, nothing more. Would you care to be specific?

If you continue to prattle on like this, you should not be surprised that religion continues to prevail over your cynical, bitter, twisted world view.

But which religion? There are so many! Not Scientology, please no!! Perhaps Jedi, that seems quite popular at the moment.

Well, nothing better than being taught about "reality" by a man who believes that a few Latin words over some wine and crackers turns it into the actual flesh and blood of a 2000 year old Jewish zombie. If that were not enough, this wise sage of reality then deems it a good idea to engage in a weekly cannibalistic ritual of eating this gentle Jesus sweet and sour (as it were) ...

Seriously, this solemn protector of child rapists and brutalizes has done and said some pretty stupid things, but speaking about discerning reality is ignorance; writ large.

The Vatican owes me a new irony meter.

I'd be all for this being real if the blood was O- and the flesh came in transplantable organs of all types. Now THAT would give me something to make me rethink my views.

The Pope is actually superior to Jesus Christ, at least that's what he believes. He is adorned with Pagan clothing and symbols and I cannot comprehend how anyone could take him seriously.. crazy world we live in.
