Tax investigation could land Pope with €8bn bill
Thanks to the Independent for this story - in essence, concession granted to the Roman Catholic Church by the Berlusconi government in Italy may contravene EU restrictions against giving state aid, directly or indirectly, to commercial enterprises.
And if it's €8bn in Italy alone, how much more in other traditionally Catholic EU countries which are probably doing much the same?
This on top of ongoing investigations into whether the Vatican Bank is guilty of money laundering.
Not wishing to be terminally boring about it, but could it be that accountancy is what finally brings down the RCC?
