Religious services and local government in the UK

I am against the role that religion plays in our local government here in the UK and fully believe that such practices as religious services to start a new session of local government should be stopped.
That said, it was good to hear that a local humanist had been asked by the local mayor to take part in such a service as it showed that the non-religious should also be able to play a full part in all our local government roles.
How typical then that the churches should show their inherent bigotry by banning this person from speaking and how nice to see that the local media have taken notice of this this......NOT.
