I guess I am mildly surprised that it wasn't blocked all along.

But the Commies are atheists! It should be the one external site that isn't banned.

That doesn't mean they are friends of freethinkers and rational discourse. They just replace serfdom to god with serfdom to the state. They aren't any different from a religion.

depends on the commie, maoists... yeah, they are like the Stalinists- a cult of personality. Trotskyites, however, not terrible or usually unreasonable folks in general. I'm more of a technochratic socialism and transhuman socialism guy, just between you, me and the whole internet. :P

Being a regional thing, sometimes, it would seem to put it under the control of a regional bureaucrat with regional whims.

I don't know if it actually is block. I, in America, have been having problems with the site too. I get a grey page that say that the page has timed out or that a resource is unavailable.

FWIW, in Chile I've never, ever had any problem connecting to RD-Net. Since Chilean connexions are re-routed through US hubs, I would regard Michael Austin's troubles with suspicion (then again, I'm notoriously paranoid).

The Chinese government is notorious for for messing with the Internet. Basically it needs to grow up and play by the rules the rest of us use. I have recently configured mail server (in the UK) to reject any connections from Chinese IP addresses because past problems. I am not the only person who has been forced to do this (see, for instance: http://2mbit.com/content/no-access-china.)

I'm a little confused, Comment 7. Are you saying that you think I'm lying or that you think that there's something funny about my connection?

I'm not entirely sure what I gain from being dishonest, but I can assure you that that is not the case.

Since nobody has posted the magic words, "I'm in China and obviously the site is not blocked as evidenced by this comment", I'm inclined to believe that the site is indeed being blocked.

Surely someone reading this has a friend in China you could call or e-mail and ask them to check? I would myself, but I lack such a friend.

Just try it at any internet cafe, obviously. (It's not normally blocked, although I'm in Hong Kong at the moment).

Hi all, I've been a long time lurker, but I now finally found a thread where I could actually contribute :). Have been learning a lot here though. I'm in Chengdu and I can confirm that the site is only accessible through a proxy outside China. I'm using a Hong Kong based proxy now.

Regarding comment 11: Hong Kong is a SAR (Special Administrative Region), and different rules apply. They do not have the censorship we have on the mainland.
