America loses faith with the God Squad?

An interesting piece today in the Independent.
Matthew Norman (an unashamed atheist, and a writer I respect a lot) basically argues that Obama doesn't have to try to win in 2012 because the Republicans have, in effect, already decided obligingly to lose.
OK, so far, so much a normal political op-ed piece, but maybe (I hope!) Norman is onto something with his central idea that the "God is a Republican" argument has finally worn out the welcome mat, and America is ready to move on.
Is there a small cause for optimism here?
