Egypt: frying pan into the fire?

Christopher Hitchens said that religion poisons everything.
Well, according to the links below, it looks like it might already be poisoning the Egyptian revolution with the results of the recent constitutional referendum enshrining Sharia as the basis for law (religious leaders told voters it was their "religious duty" to vote "yes" with a "no" vote being "sinful") and bringing on a rapid general election that will favour candidates backed by the already highly organised Muslim brotherhood over the still disparate and uncoordinated secular and liberal forces that lay behind the revolution.
So, is Egypt jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire? Will it end up as the new Iran? What can be done to prevent this? Is this always the inevitable result in a highly religious society?
