Hitchens, Dawkins, and eradicating religion

In one of the more gripping scenes from the documentary Collision, Christopher Hitchens said that if he had the ability to eradicate religion by de-converting the last religious person in existence he wouldn’t do it. This statement was nothing surprising to me, but to Professor Dawkins it was a bombshell of a saying.
Given that, firstly, was anyone here as shocked as Professor Dawkins? Secondly, if given the opportunity, would you allow religion to remain in existence if you had the opportunity to?
