My mother has leukemia

Hello:
I know this is a more personal topic than is usual for this site. I was just told that my mother has been diagnosed with an agressive form of leukemia. Her treatment options are not very pleasant. She is going for a second opinion in a day or two and has been given a life expectancy of about 1 year.
My first reaction is shock. I, instinctively, said a short prayer for her. I realize there is no real point to it, but it did give me a little comfort.
I am hoping I might be able to draw on the collective wisdom of my fellow posters on the subject of how to deal emotionally with this situation, from a non-theistic, naturalistic point of view. I also have my mother AND father to consider.
Anyway, I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Jay G.
