Do children come up with God on their own?

I've read that in multiple places (including the God Delusion) that humans have an inclination to assign purposes to objects, which probably was advantageous for our evolution. I've also read that children are born Atheists all over the internet; in fact I was defending that position in an argument last weekend.

However, I've been trying to look up research papers that support that notion and haven't been able to find any. It makes logical sense to me, that children wouldn't come up with "God" on their own, but do we have any empirical evidence for this?
