Is the Australian Christian lobby dominionist? - Comments

Lobbyists are people paid to push specific agendas. You should expect them to do this and push as hard as they can (or they may be sacked). If there were any atheists in Australia, no doubt they could start a lobby group to oppose this Christian lobby. They obviously don't care or there are too few or they don't have the cash.

Anyway, globally it's religion over 6 billion and atheists only about 75 million so naturally religion always wins. Rich (billions to fleece for funds), Focussed (typically only one agenda, demonstration of power) and with legions of brainwashed followers willing to kill and die for their beliefs (though of course "this has nothing to do with us!") and which can be utilised to remove obstacles and ensure success.

In fact, raytoman, a national lobby group to counter the inflluence of the Australian Christian Lobby has been in development for the last 12 months and is about to be officially launched. You can see more information at: http://www.reasonaustralia.org

I can assure you that Reason Australia has no plan to implement an 'atheistic' Australia or to interfere with the reasonable religious rights of our fellow Australians (insofar as those 'rights' do not hurt others). Reason Australia seeks only to protect our secular system of government so that the views of people of all religions and none are fairly represented. With so many diverging and conflicting views on religion, we believe strongly that governments must base their decisions, as far as practicable, on reason, unbiased professional research and scientific evidence.

The Islamist and Christian stories here have one thing in common: as religion gets more marginalised, and irrelevant to most people's lives, so the faithheads are forced into ever more extreme positions (and impossible contortions of "logic") to justify their own existence, even to themselves.

On the whole we should welcome these death throes. It's just unfortunate that in a few cases the nutters will resort to terrorism rather than admit defeat (and I'm looking at people who murder abortion doctors just as much as any other jihadis here....)

Chrys: good to hear of your initiative.
