Freud and psycho-analysis: still useful?

First of all, I know next to nothing about psychology or psychiatry. But my girlfriend studies psychology in Brazil, where studies are apparently heavily Freud-based.
When a friend of mine who studies neuro-psychology found out about this, she attacked my girlfriend (verbally!), arguing that Freudian theries may have had their use, but have long been superseded by modern psychologists. Caught in the crossfire, I made the critical error of asking some questions. Both presented valid-looking papers, and now I still don't know:
Are Freudian theories, in particular psycho-analysis, still useful in treating patients?
It would be greatly appreciated if any experts out there could present some conclusive papers, or make their case in layman's terms.
