In the 1980s a NASA scientist by the name of Tom Armstrong was invited to Jeddah to discuss astronomy. At the event he was presented with various verses from the Quran and asked to explain how scientific facts only discovered recently are described in a book over 1400 years old.
Tom Armstrong's response was recorded by TV cameras and later appeared in a video called "This is the truth" in which he was presented as someone who thought the Quran's contents were inexplicable.
I interviewed Tom Armstrong recently and asked him to explain what he really thought of the verses in question, and whether or not he felt that his position had been correctly represented.
You can see the interview here.
In summary, Tom Armstrong was being "charitable and polite"
