German politicians pledge to protect religious circumcision
We're never short of examples of how religion poisons everything. But this issue of circumcision in particular used to really irk Christopher Hitchens; and it's not difficult to understand why. In fact, if anything irked Mr. Hitchens more than the mutilation of infants for fanciful religious notions, I would guess it was the political correctness of the non-religious zealots who turn their heads away from this atrocity and put it down to freedom of religious expression.
While there are some who may argue the possible medical benefits of the practice, that's neither here nor there when it comes to the religious motivation. Infants today continue to have their genitalia hacked at as a ritual associated with a land-deal between a supernatural entity and the backward, ancient nomadic tribe who conjured him up.
Religion teaches staggering ignorance; and occasionally throws in violence for good measure.
