I know, stonyground, it's not really what you menat, and it's a digression but it drives me mad when people argue that there was this or that benefit of the religion under discussion. Islamic science or maths or lenses. It is an awful perversion of the truth. The religiosity ought to be understood to have been trivial, the science essential. The tragedy (and the puzzle, to me) is it didn't work that way. I get so angry about it I often want to go with an axe and chase old men about their houses.

No wait....what I mean is I get slightly upset and try to reason...

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this:

Anyway, a very clever book by a dying man who was annoyed by "alternative medicine". It is quite old now, but plus ca change....

It's funny and clever, and if I'm ever as ill as he was, I hope I can face it as truthfully as he did.

Go to: Does Morality Need God?

I have a sense of morality. I do not believe in god. I can therefore see no point to this video....

more people should join alabasterocean in pointing out that this is just pointless. Perhaps we can then spend some time exploring what is the real meaning of morality, and how it differs from, and is perverted by religiosity.

Of course you know that the Jesuits' aphorism:

"give me the child until 7 and I will give you the man"

is paraphrased in their secret black book (for jesuitical clarity, it says) as:

"We'll never get a grown up to believe this shit".....

These waters should not be muddy.
"If you want to know how to reconcile the fact of evolution with your religious faith (or the faith of others), please consult your minister, rabbi, or spiritual counselor." is perhaps all that needs to be said.
But I would add that S.J. Gould was rarely plain silly, unfortunately NOMA is. It's kind of sad. The trouble is the magisteria (silly word) do overlap. And one of them has never, ever had a defence of any kind but sophistry. It's a sore point, more or less raw, with the religiose, and while there is a certain tact and human grace that should prohibit wanton poking of peoples sores, it would be foolish to pretend they aren't there, and where they might find relief.
