Well, last night while flipping through some of the live video feeds from NYC, I stumbled upon the audio of this tastefully produced ABC story*, playing in the background. I don't know who's worse - the parents or the producers of the segment. No, let's not miss this rare opportunity to cater to the notion that faith triumphs over science, by imagining the boy victoriously debating Stephen Hawking. Brilliant.

*The tragically ill four-year-old boy - now twelve - who briefly went to heaven (true story), later prompting his highly reliable pastor father to construct a bestseller based on the seemingly rehearsed testimony of his son.

Interesting. Personally, I can't stand Garbarek's shrill saxophone tone most of the time, the clearest exception being his work on Keith Jarrett's "My Song". Speaking of ECM artists, the contemporary composer Arvo Pärt is a big favorite of mine, in spite of his seeming obsession with Christian themes ("Te Deum" is not to be missed).

Come to think of it, Keith Jarrett was reportedly raised a Christian Scientist (whatever that is). Not that I think for a second that any religious conviction carries the slightest bit of weight when considering the lifetime of hard work these people have dedicated in perfecting their craft. Even if they would claim so themselves.

I certainly appreciate Mozart's Requiem, and I am sometimes in the mood for Garbarek's "Officium", with its Gregorian chants.

Happy 70th birthday. I will be celebrating this day by returning a borrowed copy of The Extended Phenotype to the campus library, along with buying a fresh, new copy for myself. Best wishes.

"God is such an amazing god!"

At least the response is encouraging - I've never witnessed such immediate and massive outcry on YouTube.

I like the way this man, whatshisname, constantly puts forward that he's a simple, modest man (the opposite of, yes, arrogant), not really intellectually equipped to matching Dawkins, though certainly open to the possibility of changing his mind, if not positively expecting it. I'm embarrassed to admit I initially rather bought into it.
