Go to: More on the National Prayer Day case

Ron Millam, thank you for the comment about contacting the White House. As pointless as it may be in the end, I sent a similar e-mail and encourage everyone to do the same. Here is mine:

Dear President Obama,

I wanted to send a comment regarding the recent National Day of Prayer lawsuit filed by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, which resulted in the Supreme Court decision deeming any such "holiday" as unconstitutional. I was very happy with the Court's decision in this case (unlike many of their recent decisions), as the Constitution clearly lays out a separation of Church and State. Instituting a national day of prayer, though not legally forcing any individual actually to undertake any sort of prayer against their own free will, still serves as a federal mandate for religious practice. (Additionally, though not spelled out in the day of “prayer,” such a day in America clearly expresses a Christian worldview, thus supporting if not promoting one religion over others.)

For the many Americans like myself who are non-theists and do not engage in religious practice, such an institutionalization of religion and religious practice makes me extremely uncomfortable. The Bush Administration took great efforts (all of them disturbing in my opinion) to bring religion into the political realm—and at the executive level no less—which surely has led to the overwhelming amount of religion-infused rhetoric being wielded by conservative pundits. Not only has this led to a rancorous, contentious, divisive climate in our country, it also surely fuels the suspicion and anger of non-Christians in this country and abroad—not something that makes me very confident in this age of Islamist militantism and worldwide terrorism. But most importantly, on our very own home front, a federally mandated day for religious practice, and a specific form of practice (tied closely to the predominant religion of this country and your administration) at that, undermines the protections laid down by the authors of the Constitution against any form of religious tyranny.

Please, President Obama, abandon your appeal of the Supreme Court’s decision and this entire cause of a National Day of Prayer. Let religious practice remain where it should be: in the homes and institutions of believers, not in the broader public sphere in which all of us, believer and non-believer alike, must live and cooperate to keep our nation strong and free.

Thank you, and be well.

Go to: Pope's 'revenge' as LA gets Opus Dei bishop

Good grief. We all better watch ourselves, for surely sometime soon we will witness another Crusade and an army of Opus Dei soldiers marching forth from the vaults of the Vatican to slay this world of heathens. And Benedict will be riding valiantly, in shining white armor, way way back behind them all, in his little car with the bulletproof glass...

This is just absolute nonsense. More of the same: "Why are all you mean ol' people picking on us poor Catholics???" And claiming that Hitchens & Dawkins are strictly anti-Catholics is just slanderous. They are not prejudiced at all in their criticisms of religion. Sheesh. Talk about a victim complex.
