Go to: Atheists excel in religious knowledge

I'm not too sure of the context of comments 206 & 213, but it got me thinking of this book that I have always wanted to recommend to RD.net individuals who are interested.

Tis "The Book of Genesis Illustrated" by R. Crumb. It's truly great. Do track it down.

Re: Richard's linked quiz (comment 204)

I got 28, which I thought was not too bad I guess.

But re "The Awakening" question (question 4). The first thing that popped (or pooped) into my mind was that John Edwards was that psychic medium person who "speaks to the dead". And so I thought next that yes he's provided a great awakening to so many lives, the bastard! I then quickly realised that of course this JE person I imagined could not be right considering the context of the question.

But the horrible thing is that now I have to recover from picturing this cheesy John Edwards individual in all his ghastly glory! Pray for me so that I may be cured!!!

Comment 90 by prettygoodformonkeys :

This man is not a thinker. Seeing (and, FFS, agreeing with - !) two sides of an argument is not thinking, it is comparing. Thinking is much more difficult, and much more uncomfortable.

That's pretty funny what you just expressed. Does not thinking involve looking at sides and levels of arguments, and therefore considering and comparing? And further to allow oneself to engage with the full spectrum of competing ideas? No matter where they come from? He wasn't really contradicting himself, although I somewhat disagreed with his Dawkins might not know what he is talking about bit.

The nature of his article was to outline the focus of the upcoming debate. So he had to involve competing ideas. He wasn't so much presenting two sides but showing different valid points (depending on the reader and what they consider valid). He wasn't supposed to provide us the logical deductions from a debate that has not yet happened.

Being an editor he's probably bored at hearing the same arguments and now wants to see some development in atheist rhetoric.

Comment 71 by Steve Zara :

I'm bored by New Atheism

I think that's just what is needed as well - keep the debate shifting towards harder and harder science, towards a more solidly naturalistic philosophy. Now is not the time for less "New Atheism", it's surely time for much more.

Yes, I agree :)

But is it the lead up to "New New Atheism" (the one that is hinted at by this article?)
