Go to: RDF TV - Vestigial Organs: The Wings of the Flightless Cormorant - Galapagos Vignette #1

Another very good vignette, as they all have been.
Wish I could "ad lib" to that level about, well, anything.

Anyway, I did have a question. Is there such a thing as vestigial behavior or instinct along with vestigial organs? The ancestors of these birds had wings for flight but the ancestors of these birds also (needed to) air out their wings to dry them off for (later) flight. The behavior obviously remains despite the birds' flightlessness.

Anyway, my attempt at very amateur biology/ethology.

Thanks.

Very moving. Here's hoping Nate Phelps' book is widely publicized and read.

For an interesting and at times funny look at Westboro, I can certainly recommend the actor Keith Allen's documentary on youtube. Search for Keith Allen vs Westboro Baptist Church.

Go to: Mecca mosques 'wrongly aligned'

D'oh!

"In any case, it does not affect the prayers."

Really? So this 5x per day exercise can just be in the approximate or the vague direction of Mecca (the Kaaba)? Your standards are slipping, boys...

Some worshippers are said to be anxious about the validity of their prayers.

Of all the things to spend your time worrying about in this life. Whether you're kneeling in the correct direction so that words spoken to yourself/to the air can be received by Allah. As much of a badass as he's supposed to be, a prayer said whilst kneeling to the West, He just can't seem to tune in the proper frequency, I guess.

Go to: MUST WE ALWAYS CATER TO THE FAITHFUL WHEN TEACHING SCIENCE?

I think Professor Coyne is right on about this but, how does his opinion here square with the following from the introduction to "Why Evolution is True":

Nor need it (accepting evolution) promote atheism, for enlightened religion has always found a way to accommodate the advances of science.
