Letsbereasonable

I am making reasonable assumptions. Indeed it would be great to have hard evidence on this supporting either side.

You don't need to be hostile.

Let's be reasonable. Yawnn, good night!

Yes, I got your point. Some people really argued that the ban would punish the victims, though. And that this would increase their suffering. Nah...

Piero, I don't think we are punishing the victims if we ban the burka. We are really protecting the victims and restraining the perpetrators. The perpetrators are men who force women to wear burkas.

Comment 331 by mikey3ul-2 :

Describing their clothing as rubbish bags is a calculated dehumanisation. If we think muslim men don't respect women's status as human beings, we should lead by example and enshrine their human right to wear their religious clothing, not reinforce the supposed denial of personal choice by denying it again.

Describing muslim women as being equivalent to the contents of a rubbish bag is islamophobic, mysogynistic and racist. There has been the most undignified rehearsal of excuses here. However elaborate the excuses become, they do not stop being excuses.

Mikey, frankly your conclusions do not follow from the things I say. You accuse me of being misogynistic. Oh please! I did not say burkas are rubbish bags. And I certainly do not suggest that Muslim women are equivalent to the contents of a rubbish bag. Be assured that I am not a fascist. I love my human brothers and sisters, Muslim or otherwise. But I do believe Islam is a set of bad ideas worth fighting against. Muslims are victims of their religion. Do muslim women have a right to wear a burka? I suppose so. But what I am trying to argue is that this is not a right of women at all. It's a right exercised by men in order to oppress women. Men should be denied this "right".
