He only "touched on" evolution in his previous books?

Haha, apparently the "journalist" thinks the God Delusion was Dawkins' first book.

Go to: Religious Ed. rebellion

@GarrickW: well thats unfortunate. In theory a class on religion seems just fine.

Pedagogically it seems like it would make more sense to just have it be part of history class, this is what my school did. At least during my education it was the in-style thing to do; I had integrated history and English for most of high school.

Also this way the reason to learn about religion is more clearly defined. Here the reason is to become more tolerate so its kind of natural for your teacher to just downlplay anything negative. I actually do believe that learning about religions will help people become more accepting, but its not necessary to gloss over ugly parts.

@Lucas Wiccan really is a New Age movement, I don't think anyone really questions this. It has roots to ancient belief like any religion does.

Atheism is likely the oldest religious stance of all. Its documented in Ancient Greece, which is the latest its been around.

But damn, your sister believes in Santa Claus at 10? WTF?! I don't believe this. Like seriously, maybe your sister just thinks she needs to say she believes in it. Your sister is being way made fun of at school if she still believes in Santa for real.

Go to: How Camp Inquiry introduces kids to the principles of humanism.

@en0tjh appears to be more of a pro-science camp. In an age of email forwards, skepticism is quite an important concept to teach regardless of your view on religion.

Plus those kids are old enough to make up their own mind. I decided to be an atheist at about that age.

This guy needs to watch http://richarddawkins.net/article,3342,Hitchens-v-Albacete---Excerpts,AlecsDeLarge-Christopher-Hitchens and perhaps realize some of their own priests aren't necessarily towing the party line. :D

Go to: Hitchens v Albacete - Excerpts

This guy knows how to handle Hitchens. He argues that a belief in God etc should come from love. We can't really argue with that. Overall he doesn't use any of the kind of arguments that the God Delusion decimates. Whenever Hitchens brings up some dogma or another it looks like he's creating a straw man.

I do think a moderate believer could watch this "debate" and come away feeling stronger in their beliefs.

Reminds me of my favorite bit of Religulous was the priest outside of the Vatican talking about how pointless all this pomp and finery was. :)
