I enjoyed Genome and The Red Queen quite a bit. I remember being extremely disappointed to see him write in one of them (don't recall which at this point) that global warming was an example of irrational panic.

I'm even more disappointed to see that he continues to be so tragically ignorant of the facts. And it does seem ironic that many of the intellectual traps he refers to are holding him firmly even as he describes them.

Go to: Bad at estimating? Blame evolution

This is a case of some rather abysmal thinking that could have been avoided with the application of a little bit of middle school physics.

The box of butter feels heavier because it feels heavier - it's not a cognitive illusion. The much larger box of saltines has a larger area of contact than the smaller, denser box of butter. Given the same mass, the pressure at said area of contact will be higher for the butter, just as it would be for two objects of the same physical size with differing masses.

Never been able to trust a guy in a goatee?

The text you linked, if anything, makes the case look worse for the judge.

There were allegations (disputed) of harassment by the mother, but she renewed a custody agreement after those, which still leaves us with nothing but the change in religious status to go on.

Regardless of what other facts enter into it, the judge has absolutely no business even mentioning religion. Neither parent has a legal right to enforce any religious upbringing on the other.

Go to: Sky-blue-pink. A colour never before seen?

I rather think that all of us with the proper opsins perceive red or green or blue in the same way.

For all our variety, which is substantial, study after study reveals just how identical we are when it comes to the basics of perception and behavior.

I expect the subjective experience of color (and sound, for that matter) to fall squarely in that category.

With the possible exception of those rare women who possess an extra opsin. I don't expect they experience any new colors. What I suspect is that the extra opsin (which may be a slight variation on red, or a slight variation on green) would be wired up as its normal counterpart. This may very well skew the colors of objects compared with the rest of us. But I'm more inclined to think they still experience the same subjective colors, and instead would describe objects as being of a different color, when pressed for extreme detail. Unfortunately, I have seen no empirical data on these points, so I'm speculating.
