Go to: Is Homo sapiens really wise enough to be rational about the future?

That 'ought' was the first thing I picked up on too Jay G.

The linked article reads like sensationalist, self-righteous babble.

"A creature unable to master its own demands cannot be said to merit the descriptor ‘wise’. A creature which takes little account of the growing risks it runs through its behaviour can hardly be rated thoughtful"

Ridiculous. It demeans every effort we've made, and continue to make, to curb carbon emissions, feed the hungry, educate the 'ignorant' (for want of a better word), cure the sick, and protect endangered life, both human and non-human. Humanity may be far from perfect, but we are wise enough to know that we need to do our best to mitigate the 'damage' we have inflicted to this planet in doing exactly what every other species on Earth has done since life began: Relentlessly 'exploiting' our environment to ensure the continued existence of our genes.

"There needs to be worldwide public discussion about an appropriate name for our species, in the light of our present behaviour and attributes". I'd suggest 'Homo sapientissimus'.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments guys. They are really appreciated. I suppose when I was writing it I was reflecting on the shift in the ideological zeitgeist. Since 9/11 it does appear that some battle lines are that bit more visible.

Well, for what it's worth, I agree with you that the world changed significantly after 9/11. Its false logic to just compare 'numbers' - yes it's true that there are many instances throughout history where greater numbers of people were killed - many of them have been noted in this discussion. Some of those events also 'changed the world'. But that doesnt mean 9/11 didnt. 9/11 galvanised militant islamic 'resistance'/terrorism (depending on which side you are on) globally. It produced a war which contributed to pushing the price of oil through the roof, which consequently contributed to the worst global recession in a century, but more importantly, it has played a part in destabilising the U.S economy - the repercussions of 9/11 are still unfolding and it's naive to consider the events of that day as 'small stuff'.

Comment 29 by Richard Dawkins :

but I can't deny that it's a part of how we live now.

How can you know that, when you can't even tell us what it means?

You're steeped in postmodernism whether you like it or not, quite frankly.

How do you know that, when you don't know what the word means? You might as well tell me I'm steeped in semolina.

I'd have more respect for your view if you removed your internet connection and avoided all art, culture and media. If you're going to reject postmodernism then do it right.

And I'd have more respect for your view if you would explain in what sense the Internet, and art, culture and media are 'postmodern'. Since you don't seem to know what 'postmodern' means, I don't see how you can make such a statement.

So, define 'modern'.

"...for the society's well-being."

I suppose your not implying group-selection or anything like that? Prof Dawkins has been at pains to make clear that the 'group' is not a very useful level of analysis, from a biological perspective.

Why isnt it?
