Go to: Do we need objective morals?

DavidXanaos's Avatar Jump to comment 10 by DavidXanaos

I think there is such thing as society independent morals, though it is of cause not human independent.

I think that some sub set of desirable behavioral patterns are evolutionary hard coded into our brains.

Thats why some aspects of morality seam to be very seminar in any society or why some things seam to 99% of people just plain wrong.

Like Killing, we don't have to learn as children not to kill others or animals etc... thats the hard coded default, this can be changed by society and/or authority but as we see on the cases of many ex soldiers they often get traumatized by their own actions. Well unless they manage to see the enemy as non human, a typical tactic imployed by despotic regimes, to picture the opponent as primitive savages or something so that the own soldiers don't feel empathy for them.

Now of cause there are psychopaths who burned cats as children and are eagerly awaiting to become adults buy a legal gun and start killing people. But they are a small minority those their "mutated" morality is insignificant to the morality of our species, which simply can be defined as an superposition of all build in moralities of all humans currently alive.

Go to: Conspiracies taking over where religion left off

DavidXanaos's Avatar Jump to comment 4 by DavidXanaos

I think bullshit woo ich 100x better than organized religion, I mean all this stuff is mostly non exclusive and does not in its current state coagulate into any coherent power system.

I mean the worst thing about religion is the control it tries to exert over 3rd parties, this woo stuff is so versatile that it is unlikely it will have any organized influence on the society.

Go to: Rhode Island cross controversy - legitimate or petty?

DavidXanaos's Avatar Jump to comment 177 by DavidXanaos

imho removing such religious marks is pointless. Our aim should rather be to change the society so that when a average person looks on a cross or david star or whatever only seed a cross or 2 interleaved triangles, but not at the fiorst thought assotiates any religiuse meaning with it.

Like today its the case with any other forgotten religious signs.

Go to: Religion as "comfort" to people in distress: fact or myth?

As an atheist, all I can really tell him is that death is a part of life and that it's something all creatures on earth will experience someday. I can tell him that living forever would cause a lot of problems due to overpopulation and scarcity of resources (not to mention the inevitable boredom inherent in living for billions of years, let alone forever).

You could tel him that due to advances in medicine he has a good shot on leaving long enough to live in a time where his live can be prolonged by technology so long that he will be so bored to death that he at some day will want to die.

Or may be, we will just downlaod the minds af all old people into the google cloud where they will exist until out run blows up and the system gets blasted alway with the earth.

imho. this are possibilities that are possible during the next 100 years or so.
