It seems as though there are enough trustworthy translators into German at hand as to render proofreading unnecessary in that particular case. However, in case you should be looking for native german proofreaders anyway I would be happy to contribute, although I don't consider my English to be better than Arthur's (despite the fact that I will shortly hold a degree in English). Also, I am currently writing my thesis in English Literature on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so any mistakes in that particular area won't stand a chance to escape my notice ;)

Jim Jefferies is another great example. He probably won't convince any true believer, but he "sure as hell" makes me roar with laughter (even though I like pandas):

Comment 59 by Pigzig :

Even though it is written "Thou shalt not kill" many Christians have killed in the name of God.

Well, there are exceptions, you know.

Exodus 21, 15 “Anyone who attacks[c] their father or mother is to be put to death."

16 “Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death, whether the victim has been sold
or is still in the kidnapper’s possession."
17 “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death."
20,21 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the
slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a
day or two, since the slave is their property."

22, 18 “Do not allow a sorceress to live."
19 “Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal is to be put to death."
20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed".

        31. 15 [...]. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death."

Leviticus 20, 2 "Say to the Israelites: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any

of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to
                   stone him."
11 “‘If a man has sexual relations with his father’s wife, he has dishonored his father.
Both the man and the woman are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own
12 “‘If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them are to be put to
death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads."
13 “‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them
have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their
                     own heads."
14 “‘If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must
be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you."
15 “‘If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must
                      kill the animal.
16 “‘If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the
woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own

24, 16 "...anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death."

27, 29 “‘No person devoted to destruction may be ransomed; they are to be put to death."

Numbers 31, 17 "Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for

yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."

Deuteronomy 13, 6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. 9 You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery." 12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in 13 that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.

Job 36, 12 But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword."

And I have a feeling there's more. I know I am picking and choosing. So are you, unless of course you have never read the ugly bits.

Also, this is about as off topic as anything can be. Sorry for that.

Comment 6 by Beethoven :

Come on Germany, you are the land of Beethoven, Goethe, Heine, Marx, Schiller -- some of the greatest free-thinking spirits. I know you can do better than ingratiate yourself with the pope.

Thank you for your post. As a german, it always saddens me that the first (only?) thing many people think of when Germany is mentioned are the horrendous crimes commited by the nazis. I will do my best to refrain from supplementing your list (because I know national pride is just ugly), except for Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, and Nietzsche.

and now for something that is actually on topic:

“Without Christianity, our country is simply impossible to imagine.”

What that moron meant to say was of course that today's supposedly free, liberal, pluralistic Germany would be unimaginable if it were not built on "christian values". I don't need to tell anyone here how mind-bogglingly idiotic this is. The problem is that most politicians in the Bundestag appear to buy into this kind of baloney, given that only 6 in 600 parliamentarians are unwilling to come cheer for a "leering old villain in a frock". This may in turn be caused by their belief in the fairy tale that Hitler's was an "atheist regime" . The Churche's rewriting of history has really served its purpose.

As many have pointed out, the 'christian democrat' (does that term strike anyone as paradoxical?) would have been spot on if he had said "Without Christianity, our country as it was about 70 years ago would be simply impossible to imagine."

Two words. Big Bang. Only happend once, has far as we know. Radioactive decay. Does not follow cause effect. it's spontaneous.

I am no physicist, but as I understand it we do not yet have a very good grasp of the Big Bang or anything like a single theory of it. There are models such as the cyclic model of cosmology which postulate that it did not happen just once and will happen again. A certain interpretation of M-theory seems to indicate that "universes" around us may be coming in and out of existence all the time in the higher dimensions around our 4-dimensional brane. However, if time as we know it came into existence only after the Big Bang (Stephen Hawking says in his latest book that time before the Bang behaved like a fourth dimension of space), then talking about "before", "after" and causality becomes more than difficult. Our common sense understanding of cause and effect also breaks down when we examine the universe at the atomic and subatomic scales. Bad Brains. An even better example than radioactive decay, IMHO, is Wheeler's "delayed choice experiment". One should note, however, that quantum mechanics makes astonishingly accurate predictions despite the "spontaneous" behaviour of individual atoms or particles.
