Condolences. But Richard, also reminds me of the first paragraph of Unweaving the Rainbow.

Thanks Dawkins family!

LOL! The hatemails are funny, but they can also be disturbing. I recently had a discussion with a group of religious people who just pounced on me. I defended well with all the science and all they came up with was - Look at the sky, Look at the ocean, how do you explain that??!!

Man, they are so sophisticated in some areas but soo dumb in religion and supernatural dogma.

My learning - Never debate about this in a group where the group is predominated with theists. Do it one on one if possible.

Hitchens warms the cockles of my heart. Is there a link for the full debate?

Yes Alan4discussion, we know the answer of 'why we are here' which is there is no specific reason. Like Gould said, " if one could rewind the tape of biological history and start the process all over again, the outcome would surely be different. Not only there might not be humans, there might not even be anything like mammals"

That is different from saying we don't know or we are clueless.

Hi holalkere,

Doesn't evolution by natural selection explain the how we are here and the why we are here among many other things?

Pat's commentary discounts the religious theory but also discounts the scientific theories based on evidence. He says nobody knows and anyone who knows including the scientists are just guessing. Well evolution by natural selection is just not guess work after the mountain of evidence collected.

I think you are jumping to the wrong conclusion here. My interpretation of Pat's comments (in my bold), relate to claims about the PURPOSE of Life, the Universe, and all that! Evolution clearly explains HOW we (and all other living things) are here. It does not explain WHY we are here, because (despite what theologians might say), there is no "why", (unless you take the "why" as simply meaning it is following on from earlier stages).

He is too skeptical. I concur with Atheistegbert's comments.
