Go to: Should employers be blind to private beliefs?

Institutions have to discriminate when deciding whether to employ someone. I use the word discriminate in this case to mean 'exercise judgement'. If someone employed to teach/research/practice in a scientific field cannot accept the evidence in that or another field then surely they can not be judged to be a good candidate?

I agree with previous posters that most jobs don't require this sort of judgement to be made, but the specific case is one where it must be.

Go to: It's not a phobia – it's rational to fear Islam

I tried to blog on this exact subject this weekend, but I couldn't make it read right. Fortunately Ms Marrin did make her article read right. A rational fear (or at least caution) of Islam is fully justified.

Obviously, many individual Muslims have made the necessary accommodations to western values, but the system itself when followed rigidly can not and will not. Strict Islam is incompatible with western society, for the reasons given in the above article.

Go to: Ricky Gervais says atheism shouldn't offend

BLB's Avatar Jump to comment 49 by BLB

This interview reminded me of why I like Ricky Gervais and why I have so little time for Piers Moron. It is fantastic to see someone on mainstream television making such cogent points about his atheism. For the most part, for me, Ricky was bang on the money, except maybe the little fudge around 'spirituality'.

"Atheists must fear death 10 times more." What the hell? Why would I fear something when I won't be around to experience it? What about the fear inherent in the possibility of eternity being tortured because of a couple of screw-ups during your 70-odd year life. Now, that would give me the willies! Ricky turned this one back nicely on Moron I thought.

Happy with this. More please.

Go to: The Anglican Church just isn't sexist enough for these guys...

BLB's Avatar Jump to comment 16 by BLB

To quote Phil Jupitus (@jupitusphillip) on Twitter "Two Anglican Bishops have joined the Catholic Church. In an unrelated story, two Star Wars fans have decided they prefer Star Trek #f***off"

Wrong numbers, right sentiment.
