OK, I think I get what you mean. Yes, there are cynical glergymen who don't believe what they teach or preach and many of their followers who don't give any thought to what is said. Like you, I can't understand how anybody who gives some time in thought and study of religion can still believe in it. For many people though the path to atheism doesn't happen overnight, it's a long prosess. Take a look at some of the stories over at Pharyngula about how, for some, the path to atheism was a long one. My friend became an atheist as he was studying the bible as a serving priest. He is over 70 years old and he could leave the church tomorrow without any discomfort to himself. His corncern is directed towards all the people he has served for years, who know and receive comfort from him.
