Comment 5 by Jay G :

I recommend Pat Condell's new video, where he points out that nobody who aspires to high office in this country can afford to open himself to an accusation of not believing in God.

Spot on.

Putting aside their disturbing rhetoric (if you can do it at least for a minute) this is a brilliant job by Rationalizer. Congrats, and keep it coming!

Appreciate the responses from everyone. It seems apparent to me that although many of us have personal experiences or stories that point in a certain direction, there aren't a lot of independent scientific studies done on this issue - except for the ones conducted by pro-belief Templeton Foundation.

Hopefully that will change in the coming decades. Thanks again.

You do know this very expensive project was funded by Templeton? And that Dr Justin Barrett is a Christian?

I actually just read that. It's quite upsetting that Templeton's the only foundation that conducts comprehensive research on these issues.

The Cognition, Religion and Theology Project is the only comprehensive study I've been able to find. It was done by Oxford University researchers over a 3 year span with 40 separate studies to "find out whether concepts such as gods and an afterlife appear to be entirely taught or basic expressions of human nature." (More info here)

The study concludes that humans are predisposed to believe in gods and an afterlife. I think the "belief in Gods" part has to do with the desire to assign purposes, but the second part seems like an outright superstition, which is somewhat disheartening to me as an Atheist. Of course, our inclination to believe religious things does not make them true, but it certainly hinders the arguments against superstition.

I'm still trying to find a specific study on children, and whether they come up with the "all-powerful God" concept on their own.
