Go to: A Moment of Science

Way too oversimplified. Not EVERY scientist has a single palpable epiphanic moment. For a lot of people, a multitude of moments amalgamate into a strong desire to pursue science. Some people go into science because they're extremely talented at it, others do it to follow in a parent's footsteps. It serves no one to make futile hyperboles about what every scientist does or should do.

Go to: Discretion please, not rulebooks

I had always enjoyed Richard Dawkins' vitriol towards fundamentalist religion and his consistent attacks on extremism. While fundamentalists do exist in all religions, it is naive to assume that Islam does not harbor some of the most aggressive and cruel beliefs as well as a unique propensity towards violence. However, Dawkins' recent unilateral belligerence against Islam, even basic Muslim garment/appearance ("Supporting evidence trickled in from the brazen visibility of her face and hair, from her lack of a Koran, prayer mat or big black beard...") is shocking and disconcerting. His labeling of Islam as the 'number one most evil religion' is akin to the simplistic neoconservative notion of good vs. evil and is childish at best. As an atheist from the Middle East (originally Christian), I am disappointed that Dawkins has chosen to become an indiscriminant Muslim-basher, instead of a critic of violent/repressive Islamic practices. I would also like to know why Judaism, with its constant claims to superiority and divine protection, seems to escape Dawkins' vituperation. A systematic annexation of inhabited land and an ongoing massacre hardly justifies protection from criticism. I for one am extremely turned off by Dawkins' recent comments.
