Comment 1 by Richard Dawkins :

This is an excellent initiative, thoroughly worth supporting. Please, if you are American, contact your Congressman/woman and ask them to support it. Richard

Done. My congressman is a Rep, but I live in IL, pretty far outside the bible belt. Hopefully this makes it through.

This should be grounds for immediate impeachment. This speach was part of his innaguration, and therefore his official duties.

Comment 7 by rrh1306 :

The Gallup poll which states "In U.S., Increasing Number Have No Religious Identity" is also very encouraging. The no religious identity group has gone up close to 7 percentage points in just six years.

There was also a category of "undesignated" that was another 4% in 2010. Anyone know what that is? Is that the "I don't want to say" answer?

Comment 19 by Pitchguest :

isn't it rather weird to say atheists/agnostics are a larger group than gays or lesbians? ... but can't they be both?

Good point. Perhaps the point should just be made that there are a substantial number of us.

Comment 15 by ShesTheBeth :

Isn't it the job of the military to seek out and recruit team-player types who do not think for themselves? Does this not mesh well with religious sheep-types? Seems to me if I was a decision maker involved in recruitment methods and keeping a cohesive military unit, I would not want my troops to be the types of thinkers that seek individuality and freedom. I would want them to do as they are told, when they are told, without question - ya know religious types. As Prof. Dawkins points out, organizing atheists to a common goal is like herding cats. Cats do not make good soldiers.

Contrary to popular belief, the military does not want mindless automotons. If they did, there would be no rank other than private. Having soldiers who are capable of thinking for themselves is a huge advantage and the soldiers who only act when told to do so are often "drummed out" of the service. As a non-commissioned officer in the Army, most of my orders were something along the lines of "find a way to do xx task and get it done"
