Bigfoot is absurd. It seems preposterous to me that we have no problem finding every other hominid on the planet, but some distant relative is living in 'the wilds' and always seems to manage to elude being properly photographed or caught on film.

It all makes sense once you realize that the Sasquatch can effortlessly transcend space and time. But seriously, I think that apeman sightings are a kind of "archetypal hallucination" which would explain the consistent belief in these kinds of mythical beasts all across the globe.

I was a very enthusiastic believer in the Weird...in the seventh grade. Ape-men, UFOs, water monsters, I devoured every book I found on any paranormal subject. Fortunately, reality gave me a cold slap in the face and I have never taken any of it seriously since. That is, I am certain that parts of these kinds of stories are true, that people really are seeing strange unexplainable things. That doesn't mean that what they see is what is there, of course. The problem is that too many people are unaware of the fragility of our senses. Not only can one easily misidentify a light in the sky, but active hallucinations are not so uncommon.

And as a side note: misidentified hallucinations during the hypnogogic state. I have seen too many shows and read too many books where people believe that they have been abducted by aliens or visited by some specter when they are only slipping into another state of (un)consciousness.

There is a particular risk for young people who are in difficulties or who are emotionally fragile

They can often be found listening to such bands as Venom and Slayer while dabbling in Dungeons and Dragons.
