There's no god, so it doesn't matter. It's not a contest.

Go to: Atheist Billboard in Grand Rapids Generates Surprising Controversy

skiles1's Avatar Jump to comment 4 by skiles1

As we've talked about here in the past, to suggest that we can be "good without God" is more offensive to religious bigots than almost any other message, despite that the billboard message's main purpose is to organize nonbelievers (ultimately into a voting bloc), and not to challenge nor evangelize. So, it doesn't surprise me that conservative Christians are having shit fits over it. Actually, a couple weeks ago, I predicted that billboard would be offensive. You can't please everyone.

Go to: Is the Vatican cooperating fully with the Irish government?

skiles1's Avatar Jump to comment 31 by skiles1

The Vatican is going to lose this argument, because people can follow world news easily nowadays and if they do, they'll inevitably find the same pattern of abuse and cover-up being discovered in the American Catholic churches, in the Polish Catholic churches, in Australian Catholic churches, and everywhere. Abuse is reported, priest is relocated, priest abuses again, priest is caught by police, Holy See denies any responsibility - over and over again, all around the world. It's not an Irish problem, it's a Catholic problem.

It will behoove Catholicism to find a way to agree with every word Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore (among others) are saying on this matter, because every time Catholicism denies responsibility they're only digging the pit of bad reputation they are in deeper. And to be frank, this issue is already infuriating. Penance for the crime of child abuse should include confession to the police; if nuns and priests can punish children who do wrong, then nuns and priests can certainly relinquish adults abusers to the proper authorities as a form of punishment instead of essentially aiding and abetting them for years.

Catholic policies regarding abusers must be adjusted to match those of the society, there's no reason why Catholic attitudes toward child abusers can't be made to match - nor any reason why Catholic policies don't already match, except for Catholicism's attempts to guard the reputation of the Church with cover-ups. You can't simply order a few Hail Marys and say "Christ forgives" and be done with it - people who abuse children need to be taken off the streets. There's plenty of time for the Church and Jesus to forgive them while they're sitting jail cells. If some priests would rather be imprisoned in order to protect a child abuser rather than turn the child abuser in to the police, so be it, lock them up, too.

There's absolutely no question that the Holy See interfered with investigations into abuse of children in Ireland. The only question is how the Church should be affected by further attempts at cover-up (and that question will be answered by the integrity or lack of integrity in the Church's response).
