I'm dreading the day that a US astronaut steps onto the surface of Mars for the first time, and utters the requisite soundbyte praising god for the beauty of the universe that he created, and for delivering the crew safely to their destination. When I hear scientists talking about "God," it's hard for me to take them seriously as scientists. I guess not all astronauts are scientist though.

The U.S. does have "God" in the Star Spangled Banner but only if you use the extended version of the song. So our song is mainly about beating the brits.

Hahaha. It's funny how most Americans still believe they won the war of 1812. If that were the case, the US would own the beautiful horseshoe side of Niagara Falls, not the pitiful eyesore that they have now.

And another Atheist Republican Limey here. (Please don't confuse me with the American type republican.)

Have you considered singing "Oh Satan..." at the appropriate place at the top of your voice? Should get some attention, especially if you manage to do it at some televised national event, inauguration of a new PM or something. Admittedly you would need a bit of a martyr complex for that.

Short of those kind of theatrics, about all you can do is refuse to sing the anthem on the grounds it is discriminatory; hopefully as publicly as possible.

Good idea! Although, I'm sure people would just think I'm nuts. I remember

Sing it in French, there's no mention of any god in the french version. I learned the half and half version where the first verse is in English, and the bridge is in French, then the reprise or whatever you want to call the third part that starts with "God" in English again, but there is no reason that you can't switch that up a little.

Thanks, that's great advice! I will indeed learn the French part then!
